Recently, I had to research a certain country for a project. Luckily, the gods of projects gave me an easy pick - Argentina. Filled with wines, cities and history, Argentina is definitely a must visit for any tourist. I haven't been there myself but a particular tourist destination intrigued me. A cemetery. The La Recoleta Cemetery is a tranquil and history-filled landmark for the majority of us who love a good horror story. Built in the eighteenth century by a group of monks, the cemetery holds the remains of many notable actors, singers and several Argentine presidents. I met the notable author John Steinbeck in a very interesting way. Although Mr. Steinbeck passed away in 1968, his legacy still lives on - mostly in English classes. And it was through an English class where I met him, or rather, his work. We had read an excerpt the other day from one of his works - Travels with Charlie - where the narrator had to use a dirty hotel room due to problems with his own room. Whilst his time in that used room, the narrator notices some items left behind by the previous boarder and strings together a story and a character for the person -- based on the previous boarder's trash. Our job was to create a different story using Steinbeck's model and have that character make up a story for the previous boarder. I have done a lot of writing before but none so much as this. Recently, I was reading a book about the history and development of Forensic Sciences from way back in ancient China to the technological advances we have now. A plethora of us are interested in the forensic sciences - criminology, law and order and special agents. For most of us, the closest we get to actually seeing what happens behind a criminal case is through television series and books. For example, my personal favorite, Sherlock Holmes, explores how simple deduction and chain thinking can easily lead to solving the case. Of course, logical thinking isn't the only base of solving a mystery. For those of us that think interesting cases are within the binds of a Sherlock Holmes novel, I highly recommend you read this book. Filled with interesting and unusual cases that real life people had to solve, this book is sure to charm you if you are a fellow mystery geek!
